Found and reclaimed fabric, acrylic, velcro and thread

10 FT x 10 FT

This parachute was made to be taken apart into individual pieces. Each piece has velcro edges which allow it to be reconfigured endlessly. Along the vertical seams are figures that follow exquisite-corpse-logic that allows them to have interchangeable heads, torsos and feet. This parachute was brought to a group of students at Westfield State University who arranged it together without knowing the “correct” orientation of the images. We see instead their collective narrative built from the “nonsensical” pieces of the parachute. Prior to piecing together this parachute I facilitated a conversation with them around the lure of conspiracy communities and the all-consuming void-like aspect the internet can have on an individual. From this conversation they each contributed word associations describing their personal relationship to the internet. The students then collectively imagined metaphorical gestures using the parachute to depict these associations. We'll see these gestures show up in the documentation of their performance with the parachute.

Description: Thinking about the ubiquitous chattering teeth toy from the 80s as a metaphor for the concept of censorship through noise—-a propaganda tactic where you flood the social sphere with nonsense and misinformation so consistently that it becomes difficult to locate the original source or separate fact from fiction. I slip cast and fired porcelain replicas of this toy and attached them to a working megaphone which was used in the “How Good Are You At Following Directions?” performance.

Description: Hammerhead people and shadow puppet motifs haunt the surface of this parachute; like stories told through generations they suggest our involvement in propagating narratives from the past and our collective denial and insistence to not-see the hand (just as much a part of the shadow image) that massages the story into a specific outcome.

These particular window scenes were found in Beijing, China.

Notes: This is a site-specific piece made to the dimensions of the window of an experimental apartment/gallery space as part of "Lurking Behind My Teeth" a solo show (the work was curated in all rooms of the apartment---bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, etc). The curtain and oil painted image on it are see-through allowing the windows of the apartments across the alley to be visible, permeating the image; looking through one window into another. The lurking imagery is invisible in full sunlight and reveals itself as the night turns.

Notes Each mask has an individual title listed below. Each mask is based off of an actual Scold’s Bridle design. Scold’s Bridles were punishment devices used during the 1600s to silence women who spoke too boldly.

From top to bottom, left to right:
-Maybe it would have been a work meeting or maybe he was going to try and fuck me.
-It wasn't about my work, it was that I could leave with your secrets.
-I don't think she loves her husband.
-A reminder, where the hurried key marked my skin, where the howlers followed me home.
-When I do his job for him, I get a "good girl."
-Title held until 2048.
